Reformer Pilates During Pregnancy: What to Ask Before You Start

If you are considering reformer Pilates during pregnancy, the first question is whether the class and its exercises are appropriate for you. Choosing a machine comes later.

A reformer’s springs, moving carriage and adjustable parts give an instructor several ways to organise a session. Those features alone do not make an exercise suitable for pregnancy. Your health, previous experience and the instructor’s ability to adapt the session all matter.

This guide covers questions to ask before joining a class or buying equipment. It does not provide an individual exercise programme.

Can You Do Reformer Pilates While Pregnant?

There is no single answer that applies to every pregnancy or every reformer class.

The NHS advises starting new exercise gently and says familiar activities can usually continue during pregnancy. It recommends discussing suitable activities with a midwife when you have an existing health condition, and advises against beginning a new vigorous activity during pregnancy. Tell your instructor that you are pregnant before taking part. Read the NHS guidance on exercise in pregnancy.

Before booking, discuss the proposed activity with your maternity care team. Then ask the studio how it handles individual assessment, exercise changes and supervision.

A class labelled “low impact” still needs that conversation.

What Should You Ask a Pilates Instructor?

A useful discussion goes beyond asking whether pregnant clients are welcome.

  • What training and experience do you have in adapting Pilates for pregnancy?
  • Do you offer an individual introduction before a group class?
  • How do you accommodate advice from a client’s maternity care team?
  • Can you change the session as a client’s needs change?
  • How many participants does one instructor supervise?
  • What happens if an exercise feels uncomfortable or a client needs to stop?

Explain whether you already use a reformer or would be learning for the first time. A familiar machine and an unfamiliar class are different situations; the instructor needs to understand both.

A convenient timetable is only part of choosing a class. Ask how the session actually works.

Does the Routine Need to Change During Pregnancy?

Do not assume that your usual routine will remain appropriate throughout pregnancy.

The NHS advises adapting activity as pregnancy progresses. In later pregnancy, it recommends avoiding activities that involve lying flat on your back for more than a few minutes. It also advises staying hydrated, keeping cool and stopping if you feel uncomfortable, too hot or unwell. NHS exercise guidance.

For a reformer session, discuss positions, transitions and any support needed with your instructor. Individual guidance is more useful than an online list of exercises assigned to each trimester.

A different spring setting or an added cushion should never be treated as automatic approval to continue an exercise.

Buying a Reformer for Home Use During Pregnancy

Before buying, confirm that home practice fits the guidance you have received and that appropriate instruction is available. Then consider the practical details of the equipment.

Getting on and off

Ask for the carriage height and a clear demonstration of access. Photographs may show the overall appearance without showing how someone gets on, gets off or reaches the adjustment points.

Adjustments

Request a video showing the footbar, spring connections, straps and carriage stops. Check the instructions for securing each adjustable component.

Your instructor should determine the exercise setup. The supplier should explain how the equipment operates.

Space around the machine

Measure the room with the reformer in its working position. Include access space, doors, nearby furniture and any accessories you expect to use.

If considering a folding model, check both its open and stored dimensions. Also ask how it is moved and who will handle storage. Our foldable reformer buying guide covers practical storage questions.

Maintenance and replacement parts

Ask what inspections the supplier recommends and how replacement springs, ropes, straps and wheels are identified and ordered. A purchase decision should include the equipment’s upkeep.

A Buying Checklist for Studios Offering Prenatal Pilates

Studios planning pregnancy-focused sessions need an equipment brief that reflects how their instructors intend to teach. Before requesting a quotation, agree on:

  • Intended use: written confirmation of the model’s intended operating environment.
  • Access and layout: carriage height, overall dimensions and adjustment locations.
  • Accessories: included items, optional supports and compatibility information.
  • Instructions: assembly, operation, inspection and maintenance documents.
  • Service support: warranty terms and the replacement-parts process.
  • Delivery: packing dimensions, access requirements and unloading arrangements.

If ordering several reformers, ask whether their dimensions, adjustment systems and accessory packages are consistent. Confirm the exact configuration in writing rather than relying on a general product photograph.

Avoid selecting equipment based on an unsupported “pregnancy-safe” claim. Equipment specifications and an instructor’s assessment answer different parts of the decision.

Request Equipment Details for Your Home or Studio

Once you have agreed on an appropriate setup with your instructor, you can browse our Pilates reformers and request the information needed to compare models.

For a useful quotation, tell us:

  • Whether the equipment is for a home or studio.
  • Your delivery country and postcode.
  • The quantity required.
  • Your available floor space.
  • Any model or accessory requirements agreed with your instructor.

Atuspilates accepts single-unit, sample and mixed-model orders with no minimum order quantity. Delivery options and their scope are confirmed for your destination in the quotation.

Send an equipment inquiry to request model dimensions, configuration details, product videos and delivery options. There is no need to include private medical information; questions about exercise suitability belong with your maternity care team and instructor.
